Things to know when planning a stay at Volcano House Hawaii
We stayed in room 11 on the second floor of Volcano House. The room has a king size bed, comfortable leather couch, and side table/coffee table. It is hard to believe that you are waking up overlooking an active volcano that was erupting less than a year ago. You can wake up to native birds, and the sounds of the park.

You can find larger maps of the complete park area and the island at the maps section of the national park website. The Kīlauea volcano, the most active volcano in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is seen by millions of tourists each year. This makes it the most visited attraction in Hawaiʻi and the most visited volcano in the world.

We liked it so much that we went back for lunch the next day. This is also where you can go to pick up sandwiches to take with you on a hike. Reservations are highly recommended, and you don’t need to stay at the hotel in order to eat here.
That’s because the mountain’s slopes on that side are relatively gentle and because towns are farther from volcanic vents. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, which is part of the U.S. Geological Survey, said Mauna Loa has been in a state of “heightened unrest” since the middle of last month when the number of summit earthquakes jumped from 10 to 20 per day to 40 to 50 per day.

Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt. This map shows the general boundaries of the five volcanoes located on the big island of Hawaii. There are two drive-in campgrounds in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Nāmakanipaio and Kulanaokuaiki. The cabins sleep 4 (1 double bed and 2 bunk-style twin beds). Each cabin has a picnic table, an outdoor barbecue grill and an outdoor firepit. Seasonal campers can opt to commune in nature, under the stars, by spending their time at Volcano House in either the campsite or cabins.
Historic Location
There is complimentary Wi-Fi (perfect for uploading those amazing volcano photos), and it’s one of the few hotels in Hawaii to have a heater. Since it’s a historic hotel, there were only a couple of electrical outlets. And you’ll need to use the windows instead of the air conditioning. The location can’t be beat either – there are trails right outside your door, and you won’t have to drive anywhere if you want to go hiking or visit other parts of the park.
The Namakanipaio Campground features 10 rustic, one-room wooden cabins that are always in high demand. Intimate in the midst of nature, these cabins are ideal for visitors seeking a camping experience without setting up a tent. Closures and hazard alerts can be found on the HVNP website.
General admission is $30.00 per private non-commercial vehicle or $15.00 for pedestrians or bicyclists. Keep the receipt, because it will allow you seven days entrance to the National Park. Conditions for lava viewing (e.g., lava flowing into the ocean, accessibility of the lava flow) are ever changing. Please see our lava viewing guide for Hawaii for up-to-date information on where and how to see lava. Children up to 12 years old can become junior rangers and receive a junior ranger badge.

Chalet Kilauea is only five minutes away from Hawaii Volcanoes Nation Park too! But there’s a nice lobby downstairs where you can sit and enjoy the view. They also offer in-room dining, which is perfect for after a day of exploring the park or when you want to eat breakfast in your room before starting the day. There was a separate, cozy bathroom with a shower stall.
It offers an easily accessible, 0.7 mile, hike to the Keanakākoʻi Crater, and also has two overlook points that provide panoramic views of Halemaʻumaʻu Crater and Mauna Loa. Between May 2018 and October 2018, the hotel and the Kīlauea summit area of the national park were closed to the public due to volcanic explosions and earthquakes. The historic Volcano House hotel has hosted a cadre of world dignitaries since the original building was opened in 1846.
